On Valentine's Day, people often engage in various activities like a charming date, a candlelit dinner, or watching romantic movies together. To determine the most popular romantic movie, we examined the domestic box office of the Top 10 romantic movies since their release. Here are our findings:
-
Currently, Titanic holds the record as the highest-grossing romantic movie, earning $674.5 million domestically.
-
Beauty and the Beast held the top spot of the highest-grossing box office for 14 weeks before being surpassed by Titanic.
Titanic is the most popular romantic movie with a domestic box office of $674.5M
With a substantial lead, Titanic stands as the highest-grossing romantic movie to date, surpassing the fifth-ranked film, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, by nearly double the box office. Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and the four films in the Twilight New Moon series follow closely behind in terms of domestic box office.
Beauty and the Beast was successful upon its initial release
Beauty and the Beast had a successful debut, earning $174.8 million domestic box office in its first week. In comparison, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, which held the second position, made $157.6 million in its opening week, and the gap continued to widen after that. By the fifth week, Beauty and the Beast's box office was 54% higher than that of the second-ranked film. It was only in the 15th week that Titanic surpassed Beauty and the Beast, raking in $515.3 million. From that point onward, Titanic has consistently remained the most popular romantic movie.
Methodology
Firstly, we obtained a list of the 200 highest-grossing movies by 2023 from Box Office Mojo and verified if each movie belonged to the romantic genre using Wikipedia. Then, we ranked these movies based on their total domestic box office, and selected the top 10.
Subsequently, we collected the domestic box office data for each romantic movie on a weekly basis after its release from The Numbers. By analyzing this data, we were able to track the trend of the domestic box office performance of each romantic movie over time.
