The Trending Baby Names in Each U.S. State Throughout 2022 Revealed

Names are a crucial part of our identity and are ultimately one of the main ways people are represented to others. Throughout history, the use of certain names has fluctuated with names growing and dropping in popularity throughout the years - they can even be inspired by important historical individuals.
So, what are the most popular baby names currently across the US and are there any names inspired by American greats in politics, media, or the figures found on our banknotes and coins?
To find out more, we at CouponBirds have collected data from the Social Security Administration on the most popular male and female baby names in each US state throughout 2022. Our study explores potential ways we end up being gifted our names.
We did this to examine the current trending names and explore how specific names could potentially be inspired by influential figures in American history.
The influential figures examined were; Benjamin Franklin, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, Andrew Jackson, Ulysses Grant, Michelle Obama, Amelia Earhart, Hillary Clinton, Kamala Harris, Oprah Winfrey, Madeleine Albright, John F. Kennedy, John Adams, Henry Ford, Theodore Roosevelt, George Washington, Rosa Parks, Nancy Pelosi, Eleanor Roosevelt, Susan B. Anthony and Jane Addams.
Methodology
We wanted to find out the most popular baby names in each US state throughout 2022. To do this, we sourced all information regarding baby names from the Social Security Administration.
We gathered the top ten baby boy and girl names in each state and recorded the number of babies for each name throughout 2022. Additionally, we wanted to explore if certain baby names were inspired by historical figures from American history - to do this we cross-referenced names of historical social reformers, politicians, media personalities, and the people found on American banknotes and coins.
Alabama
The first state we investigated was Alabama. The southern state is known for its love of barbecues - but what baby names were trending throughout 2022? Data from the Social Security Administration revealed William as the most popular boy's name with 323 babies, while Olivia was the preferred girl's name, with a total of 251 girls being given this name.
Benjamin ranked outside the top ten but remained popular with 123 boys given this name. It was potentially inspired by Benjamin Franklin - a founding father who can still be found on the $100 bill. Eleanor was given to 124 girls and may reference Eleanor Roosevelt.

Moving on, Alaska is the third-smallest state - in terms of population - with just over 700,000 people living in the state. It leads to the question, what baby names are trending in this remote part of the US? The data found that Oliver (45) and Aurora (36) ranked as the most popular names for baby boys and girls.
It was interesting to see Amelia rank so highly - which may have been inspired by the great Amelia Earhart. Furthermore, names such as Lincoln (which was given to 13 boys in 2022) may reference the popular former President, Abraham Lincoln.

We found that names such as Ezekiel (241), Noah (439), and Elijah (257) each trended as boy names during 2022. Overall, Liam ranked top with 460. For girls, Olivia once again placed first in a US state with 399 babies.
Alexander ranked just outside the top ten with 219 and may have been inspired by Alexander Hamilton, one of America's founding fathers. Moreover, Eleanor was a name bestowed upon 84 girls and could reference Eleanor Roosevelt.

Arkansas is the location of natural wonders such as the Hot Springs National Park but is also where unique names such as Asher (120), Levi (104), Willow (84), and Paisley (82) can be found. Overall, it was interesting to see such similar names rank top for boys and girls
Henry was a name granted to 100 boys in Arkansas throughout 2022 - which may have been inspired by Henry Ford, the iconic American industrialist. A less popular name was Theodore - given to 64 boys and could reference Theodore Roosevelt.

Next is California. The state is known for its sunny beaches and party lifestyle, but did you know Liam (2,610) and Olivia (2,178) were its most popular baby names throughout 2022? Other more uncommon names found in the top ten included Mateo (2,371), Luna (1,516), and Gianna (1,107).
Names potentially related to American figures included Andrew (741) - possibly related to former president Andrew Jackson, also found on the $20 bill, and Madeline/Madeleine - which was given to 327 girls - a name that may have been inspired by Madeleine Albright.

Additionally, Theodore (290) and Henry (253) ranked inside the top five names for baby boys and may have been inspired by important American figures Theodore Roosevelt and Henry Ford.

Emma (172) and Charlotte (158) were also go-to options for parents in Connecticut while Noah was found to be the second most popular boy's name (257).
Theodore Roosevelt could have been an inspiration as 152 boys were given his name while Thomas Jefferson - found on the $2 bill might have also been an influence when 105 babies received the name Thomas in 2022.

Delaware was nicknamed, 'The Diamond State' by Thomas Jefferson. In 2022, 20 boys were given the name Thomas which may have been influenced by the 3rd President of the United States. Elsewhere, Eleanor was given to 12 girls and could have been inspired by Eleanor Roosevelt.

Henry may very well have been inspired by industrialist Henry Ford while Benjamin Franklin could have been the source of inspiration for the 32 babies given his first name.

In terms of popular US figures, Eleanor Roosevelt may have inspired parents as 14 girls were given the same first name. Additionally, 11 boys received the name Andrew - which may have been influenced by Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill.

Inspiration may have been taken from Theodore Roosevelt with 470 babies receiving the same first name. Furthermore, Amelia proved a popular name for girls in Illinois - potentially influenced by Amelia Earhart.
