Fortnite - The Popularity Is Undiminished
Travis Scott wowed audiences in 2020 with a virtual concert taking place in the popular game, Fortnite. Released by Epic Games in 2017, the shoot-em-up boasts over 350 million registered players, including celebrities like Drake and JuJu Smith. Fortnite has achieved huge success as a free online game, leaving an indelible mark on popular culture through its fashion, film, and music crossover partnerships.
On its first day of sale, the free version attracted more than 1 million players, and since then, its user base skyrocketed. During its initial release in late September 2017, the total number of users reached 7 million by October and surpassed 20 million by November.
Fortnite has maintained a monthly active player base of around 80 million, with over 60% of players aged between 18 and 24, although many are likely younger and may have fibbed about their age to gain access.
But what made Fortnite such a phenomenon?
From its game design and development background to its business model and the dominant social media conversation, Fortnite has managed to hit the nail on the head in almost every aspect.
